1. Wash frequency — free, and the most effective single thing you can do
No coating, film or treatment beats simply not leaving road salt on the vehicle. AAA and Zerust both recommend washing every one to two weeks through the salting season, and always after a thaw — that’s when dissolved brine is most chemically active and most mobile. Whatever wash you choose, make sure it includes an undercarriage rinse; a wash that only cleans the paint is addressing the least important surface.
One counterintuitive point: wash on a mild day, above freezing, and dry the door jambs, locks and seals afterward. Washing at −15°C leaves water in seams and locks that freezes there, which is its own problem.

2. Ceramic coating — makes everything else work better
A ceramic coating bonds to the clear coat and creates a hard, hydrophobic surface. Road salt brine sheets off rather than clinging, and contaminants have less to grip.
Be clear about what this does and doesn’t do. Ceramic coating protects coated painted surfaces. It is not an undercoating and it does not protect brake lines or the subframe. What it does is make road salt far less likely to sit on your paint between washes, and make the washes you do dramatically more effective. On a properly prepared surface, a quality nano-ceramic coating is designed to hold up through several Maritime winters with regular maintenance washes.
Best applied in autumn, before the first salt truck runs — and after paint correction, so you’re not sealing existing swirl marks under a hard coating.

3. Paint protection film — physical armour where impacts happen
Winter roads throw salt-loaded grit at speed. Paint protection film is a thick urethane layer with self-healing properties that absorbs stone chips before they reach paint.
This matters more in winter than most people realize, because every chip is a breach in the clear coat, and every breach is a place where road salt brine reaches bare metal. A chip taken in December has all winter to become a rust spot. Highest-value coverage: front bumper, hood leading edge, mirrors, and the rocker panels and rear arches behind the wheels, which take constant blasting from your own tires.
4. Paint correction before you protect anything

5. Interior protection — the part everyone forgets
Road salt tracked in on boots soaks into carpet and works into the fibres. Left through a season it stains permanently and holds moisture against the floor pan, which corrodes from the inside.

Automatic washes with no undercarriage option. These clean the surface that matters least and leave the surface that matters most untouched. Some also use abrasive brushes that add swirl marks.
Assuming a new vehicle is protected. Manufacturer corrosion warranties typically cover perforation — rust through the metal — not surface corrosion, and they come with conditions. Factory rustproofing is real but not comprehensive, particularly at seams and edges.
Waiting until you see rust. Visible rust is late-stage. What’s visible is a fraction of what’s present.
